This fall, Auburn University College of Nursing (AUCON) in partnership with Wellstar Health System, is excited to kick off the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) program at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, welcoming eight enthusiastic nursing students to this innovative clinical education experience. The DEU model designed by Wellstar Health System represents a dynamic partnership between academic and clinical settings, designed to enhance the learning experience for nursing students, and professional growth for clinical RNs serving as the student’s Clinical Teacher, while simultaneously increasing the engagement of the entire clinical team on the 6th Floor DEU unit.
The DEU is an innovative approach to clinical education that aims to bridge the gap between nursing theory and practice. Unlike traditional 6-to-8-hour clinical rotations, the DEU immerses students in the nursing unit’s clinical and learning environment for a full 12-hour shift, providing them with hands-on experience alongside dedicated their Clinical Teacher, unit staff nurses, and interdisciplinary team members, who act as mentors and role models. This collaborative learning environment fosters a deeper understanding of professional nurse identity, the nursing process, critical thinking, and evidence-based practice, equipping students with the skills they need to excel in their future nursing careers.
For the eight AUCON students participating this semester, the DEU offers an unparalleled opportunity to build their confidence and competence in a supportive, real-world setting. Under the guidance of experienced Clinical Teachers, students will develop a strong sense of professional identity and understanding of nursing’s practice and theoretical foundations as they engage in direct patient care, interprofessional collaboration, and the application of classroom knowledge to clinical situations. The DEU model allows for continuous feedback and individualized instruction, ensuring that each student’s learning needs are met, and their growth as future nurses is nurtured.
The benefits of the DEU extend beyond the students. By actively participating in the education of future nurses, clinical team members at Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center enhance their own practice through teaching, reflection, and the reinforcement of evidence-based care standards. This collaboration fosters a culture of continuous learning and professional development, enhancing job satisfaction and teamwork in the unit. Additionally, the DEU model promotes a seamless integration of new graduates into the clinical setting, potentially improving recruitment and retention of nursing staff.
With the launch of this DEU program, AUCON, and Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, are setting the stage for a collaborative future in nursing education. The DEU not only prepares nursing students for the realities of clinical practice, but it strengthens the entire healthcare system, ensuring high-quality and compassionate care for patients. We look forward to a successful semester and are excited to see the impact this innovative model will have on students, the clinical staff, and the patients they serve.
