Cleveland Clinic and Central Asian University Sign Strategic Agreement to Collaborate on Central Asian University Hospital in Uzbekistan

CLEVELAND, Ohio, and TASHKENT, Uzbekistan: Cleveland Clinic and Central Asian University (CAU) have signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of Central Asian University Hospital. The hospital will be located in Tashkent on the expanded medical campus of CAU, a leading private university in Uzbekistan. Construction of the hospital is scheduled to begin this year.

As part of this collaboration with Cleveland Clinic, Central Asian University Hospital is currently a provisional member of the Cleveland Clinic Connected program. The hospital’s leadership will work toward completing all quality assessment stages and meeting the requirements to become a Cleveland Clinic Connected member.

Cleveland Clinic is consistently recognized in the U.S. and throughout the world for its expertise and care. As part of this long-term strategic agreement, Cleveland Clinic will provide guidance to CAU in the following areas:

  • Healthcare facility design and management
  • Development and validation of existing medical education and residency programs
  • Establishment of a nursing school and simulation center
  • Clinical observerships, visiting lectures, and scientific exchange
  • Physician recruitment, supply chain management, and digital transformation
  • Central Asian University Hospital’s physicians will be able to request educational consultations of complex cases.

“We are honored to begin our collaboration with CAU to enhance care for patients in Uzbekistan,” said Tommaso Falcone, M.D., Cleveland Clinic Executive Vice President and President of International and Emerging Markets. “Part of our mission is to bring Cleveland Clinic care to patients around the world. Through this collaboration, we will work together to improve access to high-quality healthcare.”

This early-stage collaboration ensures that Central Asian University Hospital will be designed from the ground up based on the Cleveland Clinic model of care, integrating comprehensive specialties, advanced clinical centers, and world-class medical equipment. The new 120-bed hospital will be able to serve up to 269,000 patients annually, making it one of the most efficient and modern clinical centers in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan.

“Cooperation with Cleveland Clinic is a landmark step in shaping the future model of medicine and medical education in Uzbekistan,” said Kamran Gulamov, Rector of Central Asian University. “We are gaining access to global expertise and best healthcare practices, which will have a long-term impact on future doctors and patients.”

The collaboration provides for the transfer of knowledge (methodologies, protocols, and best practices) and supports training for both clinical and administrative staff to improve efficiency and enhance patient care. CAU’s core medical and operational teams will have access to Cleveland Clinic’s various educational programs and training, including advanced training in a clinical setting. The hospital’s leadership team will have access to observational opportunities and an in-depth exchange program.

In addition, CAU’s patients will benefit from Cleveland Clinic’s best practices for clinical care. When appropriate, those patients may be referred to Cleveland Clinic international hospitals.

The goal of Cleveland Clinic Connected is to build a global network of independent, like-minded, quality-focused organizations that have a positive impact on patient care. The program provides collaborative support to enable hospitals and healthcare organizations around the world to connect with Cleveland Clinic’s clinical and operational experts to enhance patient care and distinguish themselves within their markets.
